All 103 JLPT N5 Kanji (Complete List 2026)

JLPT N5 requires knowledge of approximately 103 kanji. They seem small compared to the 2,136 joyo kanji in total, but they are the foundation on which you will build everything else. In this guide you will find the complete list, organized by category, with meaning, readings and example words for each.

How to Use This List

Don't try to memorize everything in one session. The best way to study this list is to take 5-10 kanji a day and review them with spaced repetition (SRS). Study the meaning, main readings, and at least one example word for each kanji. Kanjidon includes all 103 N5 kanji with mnemonics in Italian and an SRS system that lets you automatically review the ones you're forgetting, without wasting time on the ones you already know.

Study Strategy: Where to Start

Don't go through the list from start to finish like a robot. Here's the approach that works:

  • Start with numbers and time: you'll use them every day, they stick quickly
  • Then move on to people and actions: they are the words you immediately encounter in dialogues
  • Study 5-10 new kanji a day, no more
  • Review the kanji from the previous days EVERY DAY with spaced repetition
  • For each kanji learn at least one concrete word, not just the isolated meaning
  • When you encounter a kanji in real life (menus, signs, manga), mentally celebrate

If you're thinking that's too much to handle by hand, you're right. Kanjidon's SRS algorithm decides for you what to review and when: your only task is to open the app 15 minutes a day. The algorithm does the rest.

How long to learn them all?

With 15-30 minutes a day of consistent study and a good SRS system, you can master all 103 N5 kanji in 6-8 weeks. Not weeks of suffering: weeks where every day you add 5-7 new kanji and review the old ones. After 2 months, you'll be ready to tackle the N4 and its 181 additional kanji.

The first step is always the most important. Choose the first 5 kanji from the list of numbers, study them today, and tomorrow add 5 more. In two months you will look back and not believe how far you have come. If you want a structured path with mnemonics in Italian, adaptive quizzes and an algorithm that works for you, Kanjidon is free and covers all levels from N5 to N1.
