94+ All FAQ

Let's start from the basics

What’s Kanjidon?

Picture turning kanji study into an epic adventure, where each symbol is a card to collect and every Quiz a challenge to conquer. Kanjidon is an app that mixes gamification with learning, using a spaced repetition system (SRS) to lock kanji into your long-term memory.

Open packs, tackle dynamic Quizzes, follow lessons, and track your progress with detailed stats. Whether you’re a beginner or a Japanese pro, Kanjidon makes every step fun and rewarding.

Is Kanjidon fun?

Kanjidon turns kanji into collectible cards with unique designs, like a trading card game. Each kanji has a rarity, and collecting them levels you up, all the way to 50!

Missions, rewards, and a global leaderboard add a competitive edge, while the SRS ensures you’re learning for real, stress-free. It’s studying that feels like a game!

How many kanji are there?

There are thousands of collectible cards (we’re already over 3,000) on Kanjidon, updated monthly. Basically, you’ve got all the tools to live, work, or travel in Japan, and even read manga or ace the world’s most famous Japanese exam: the JLPT.

Is Kanjidon just for kanji?

No way! Kanjidon is your all-in-one buddy for learning Japanese. Besides kanji cards, you’ll find hiragana and katakana cards (for total beginners), plus vocab and grammar cards to master Japanese from every angle.

How do I collect cards?

You get cards from packs, and they’re all waiting to be discovered. There are different types of packs, with N5 as the starter level. Each pack can have 4 or 6 Kanjidon cards, which get added to your Collection. Get opening!

The Home

What’s on the Home screen?

The Home is your command center: here you’ll find the Pack Opening section to open new packs, the heart of the app. But that’s not all—you’ll also get Lessons to dive into Japanese grammar! Plus, there’s your profile with a custom avatar, a counter for your Daily Goal (tap it for details), a Tama coin counter, and the News Center for the latest updates.

It’s designed to be super intuitive: one tap, and you’re ready to study or collect.

Where can I see the news?

In the News Center, top right on the Home screen. It’s your personal bulletin for seasonal events, new cards, features, and official updates.

Stay in the loop so you don’t miss surprises or exclusive bonuses! Notifications stick around, so even if you’re new, you can check out past news—it’s always nice!

How do I navigate between app sections?

With the menu bar at the bottom of the screen, switching between Home, Collection, Quiz, Stats, and Profile is a breeze. One tap, and you’re where you want to be, no hassle.

Smooth navigation for a seamless experience.

Cards and Collection

How does the Kanjidon card system work?

The cards are the core of Kanjidon: JLPT-themed packs (Kana, N5, N4, N3, N2, and even N1) each have 4 Kanjidon cards (6 for Premium users!). You need 30 Tama, the Kanjidon world’s coins, to open a pack. Open as many cards as you can and check out what they offer: each card has a meaning, an on reading, a kun reading, and an example sentence… everything you need to learn kanji the best way!

What's the JLPT?

The JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) is a test to check your Japanese skills. It’s split into five levels, from N5 (beginner) to N1 (advanced), and it’s used to certify your Japanese language abilities.

Kanjidon organizes cards by these levels, so you can study in a focused, structured way. If you’re starting from scratch, begin with the Kana packs: they only have hiragana and katakana, the two Japanese syllabic alphabets!

What are the rarities and types of Kanjidon cards?

Cards range from 1 to 4 stars, with unique designs for each rarity. There are also super-rare golden cards and special two-star golden event variants, available only during specific periods.

With over 20 thematic types (Nature, Fire, Sky, etc.), each card is a work of art that keeps your Collection fresh and exciting.

How many packs can I open per day?

Free users can open up to 3 packs a day. It's a perfect pace to stay consistent without feeling overwhelmed.

Open, discover, repeat: every day's a new adventure.

Where do I find the cards I’ve collected?

Once you’ve opened packs, your cards go to the Collection, the perfect spot for studying and reviewing. Here, you can see all your cards and use the bottom-right button to filter by rarity, JLPT level, type, or opening date.

It’s your personal album, and you should use it for your study sessions.

The Full Collection

In the Collection, just above the filter button, there’s a button for the Full Collection, sorted by Kana and JLPT levels (N5, N4, N3, N2, N1). Here, you can see how many cards you’re missing to complete the entire Kanjidon Collection and become a true Japanese Sensei.

Is there extra info?

You bet! Each kanji card has tons of extra info to boost your studies. In the Collection, tap a card. You’ll see an INFO button at the bottom of the screen. Tap it, and you’ll unlock a whole world about that kanji! Pronunciation, similar kanji, stroke order… everything you need. Try it now!

What are those dots on the cards?

As you do Quizzes, kanji change status. They go from ‘new’ to ‘memorized’ if you answer correctly in Quizzes! If you get one wrong, it becomes ‘to review,’ and the algorithm will show it more often until you nail it.

The symbols on kanji are: N (new, just collected), M (memorized, if you got it right in Quizzes), R (to review, if you got it wrong once), and E (error, if you got it wrong twice in a row). Do lots of Quizzes and aim for all kanji to be M!

And that number like x2?

The little x2 or x3 symbol on cards in your Collection shows how many copies you have of that card. Yup, packs can give you duplicates, just like in real life! Good news: duplicates aren't useless—you can trade them for an Omikuji, a Japanese fortune oracle.

Can I add personal notes to kanji?

Absolutely! When viewing a card in the Collection, you'll see the Notes button at the top of the screen, right above the card. Press it to add your personal notes about that kanji: mnemonic tricks, example sentences, or anything that helps you remember it better.

Your notes sync automatically across all your devices, so you can keep studying anywhere with your annotations always at hand!

Duplicate Cards and Omikuji

Can I get duplicates?

Yup, just like in real life! Every pack opening is an adventure, and it can go great, good, or not so great, meaning you might get cards you already have in your Collection! But don’t worry, you can still make use of them.

What can I do with duplicates?

In the Pack Opening section, scroll down, and you’ll see a button to access Omikuji draws, the famous Japanese fortune oracles. If you have 5 copies of the same card, you can trade 4 for an Omikuji.

What types of Omikuji are there?

Omikuji are in the Pack Opening section for a reason—they’re a real adventure. You can draw lucky or unlucky oracles, but the best Omikuji give bonuses like extra coins or Quiz Keys!

Turn duplicates into opportunities: every card counts!

Are there other ways to trade them?

Yeah, besides Omikuji, you can also trade your duplicates to get a Kanjidon card you don't have. Go to Collection, and press the button to view the full Collection. You'll see the cards you don't own are semi-transparent. Try tapping one! It'll start the trade process.

Creating Decks

What are Decks?

Decks are collections of cards you can create and customize however you want. You can group cards by themes, difficulty levels, or any criteria you like. It's a way to organize your Collection and study efficiently!

How do I create a Deck?

In the Collection section, tap the Decks button, then tap to create a new Deck. You can name your Deck, pick an icon and color, and start adding cards. Experiment with different combos and themes!

Can I edit a Deck?

For sure! Once you've created a Deck, you can always edit it by tapping the pencil button. Add or remove cards, change the name or icon, customize it however you want, or delete it. Decks are flexible and adapt to your study needs.

If you long-press a Deck you created, you can also move it to the top of the list, so you can find it more easily.

How do I use the Decks to study?

You can use the Decks to do targeted quizzes. In the Quiz section, hit the Filter button and pick the Deck you wanna use. That way, you can focus on specific study spots and boost your skills way better!

Quizzes and Training

Where do I find Quizzes?

In the menu bar, the third button is for Quizzes. This is the spot to train hard and test yourself to see if you’ve studied your kanji well in the Collection section.

Are there lots of Quizzes?

You bet! There’s not just one type of Quiz—there are tons, and new ones keep coming! That’s because it’s better to tackle Japanese from every angle, never get bored, and learn kanji and grammar from every possible perspective.

How do Quizzes work?

Each Quiz section has 10 questions, but every time you get one wrong, that kanji goes back in the queue and pops up again during the Quiz section. Kanjidon's powerful SRS algorithm tailors your Quiz sections based on your Collection, mistakes, and successes, making every session super effective.

A Quiz isn't a test—it's a challenge to grow and improve your skills.

How does the memorization system work?

Kanjidon uses the SM-2 algorithm, a scientifically validated spaced repetition system used by millions of students worldwide. It's based on decades of neuroscience research on how your brain forms memories.

Each kanji has its own score that adapts to your learning: if you answer correctly, it will be shown again after increasingly longer intervals. If you make a mistake, the interval shortens to help consolidate your memory.

This approach lets you review right before you forget, maximizing retention with the fewest repetitions possible.

Can I filter Quizzes by my level?

Yup! From the Quiz section, use the Filter button at the bottom right. You can pick your JLPT level (N5, N4, N3, N2, or N1) or even filter by Kana to practice just hiragana and katakana. It’s a system that adapts to your pace, skipping stuff that’s too easy or too hard.

Learn what you need, when you need it!

What if I don’t know which Quiz to do?

No worries! Above the Filter button, there’s a Random Quiz button, a super handy feature that picks a Quiz for you randomly. Perfect for those moments when you can’t decide which Quiz to do! After all, every Quiz is special and useful, and mixing them up gets you the most benefit.

What do I get for answering correctly?

Every correct answer earns you 1 Tama, the currency of Kanjidon’s world. The cool part? If you ace a session—10 correct out of 10—you get a +5 Tama bonus! Plus, correct answers move your cards to ‘memorized’ (M) status, and you earn Tama to open new packs and grammar lessons.

Ps: every correct answer gives you Experience Points (XP) to climb the Ranking, but every wrong answer… makes you lose XP!

Which Quizzes are available for free users?

The ‘Decidi’ Quiz is unlimited for everyone. Other Quizzes are for Premium users only, but don’t stress! Every day, you can get a Quiz Key, a special key that unlocks one Premium Quiz! That way, you can try them out and find the style that suits you best.

Give them all a shot!

How do I get Quiz Keys?

If you're a free user, you get one free Quiz Key a day! Each Premium Quiz costs one key, but if you nail 5 perfect Quiz sections (10/10), you score an extra key.

Keys are your pass to new challenges!

Are there bonuses for perfect sessions?

Yup, every 5 perfect sections (10/10) gets you an extra Quiz Key. It’s a reward for your consistency and precision.

Aim for perfection and unlock more opportunities!

How many Quiz Keys can I have at the same time?

You can have up to 5 Quiz Keys at once. If you already have 5, you won't be able to get more until you use some.

Use your keys wisely to unlock new Quizzes and challenges!

Levels and Avatars

What about Avatars?

On Kanjidon, you can customize your Avatar in the Profile section, the last button in the menu bar. Have fun switching up your Avatar to make your Kanjidon experience your own.

What’s the level?

Did you know you can level up on Kanjidon? You start at level 1, and you can keep climbing. It all depends on how much you open packs!

How does the level system work?

Open packs, memorize kanji, answer quizzes correctly, unlock grammar lessons, and more to fill up your level bar. Every action gets you closer to the next level, with tougher requirements up to level 50. Climb the ladder, one kanji at a time!

How many levels are there and what do I get?

There are 50 levels, with exclusive avatars unlocked at levels 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50. The more cards you collect, the higher you climb. Show everyone what you're made of by flashing your level on the Global Leaderboard!

What's the JLPT badge on my level?

Besides your 1-50 level, Kanjidon also tracks your actual JLPT level based on the kanji you've memorized! When you hit 50% memorized kanji for a JLPT level, your profile shows a colored badge and the level box changes color.

The progression goes: N5 (green) → N4 (light blue) → N3 (amber) → N2 (purple) → N1 (red). You gotta complete each level before moving to the next. It's your real progress in Japanese!

Are there special Avatars?

Besides the Avatars you unlock with levels, there are also super special Avatars you can unlock every month with the World Ranking. If you make it to the top 10 positions or even 1st place, on the first day of the next month you'll get a notification saying you’ve scored an awesome Avatar.

Basically, you can win a new Avatar every month if you rock the Ranking!

Every lesson is a win!

Starting with N5 is perfect for beginners, while N1 is for real experts!

How does the League Leaderboard work?

Each League has its own independent monthly Leaderboard. Do Quizzes to earn Experience Points (XP): every correct answer is worth points that vary by League (harder = more XP!). Perfect sessions (10/10) give you bonus XP.

Each League has different difficulty levels: N1 offers up to 500 XP for a Battle win, while N5 offers 100 XP. Climb your League and become champion!

How long does the Leaderboard tournament last?

Battles and Ranks

Every Battle is a test of speed, precision, and strategy with Power-ups!

How does Battle with a Friend work?

If it can't find anyone in 6 seconds, you'll face a CPU opponent. Win to climb Ranks and earn extra XP!

How do you play in Battle?

Battle has 3 steps, for a total of 15 questions (5 per step). You'll get on readings, kun readings, and meanings. Answer correctly and quickly to earn XP!

Every correct answer earns you points, but watch out: wrong answers make you lose XP. The key is balancing speed and accuracy!

What are Power-ups?

During Battle, answering correctly earns you Power-ups to use to your advantage! Each battle has 3 power-ups randomly selected from these 7:

• Mirror: Flips your opponent's cards
• Makkuro: Darkens your opponent's view
• 50%: Eliminates half the wrong answers
• Earthquake: Shakes your opponent's cards
• Flip: Flips your opponent's cards face down
• Bubble: Fills your opponent's screen with bubbles to pop
• Swap: Replaces your question with one you already answered

Use them strategically to win!

How do you win a Battle?

After 15 questions, whoever answered the most questions correctly wins. In case of a tie, whoever has the lowest average response time wins.

Each step has a countdown: when it runs out, it automatically moves to the next step. Speed and accuracy are essential!

What are Ranks?

Rank is the tier that measures your Battle skill. You start at Rank E (beginners) and climb up to S (experts), passing through D, C, B, and A.

Your Rank is visible on the badge on your Avatar and determines who you'll be matched with in Online Battles!

How do you climb Ranks?

Win Battles to climb Ranks! The Ranks are:

• E (beginners)
• D
• C
• B
• A
• S (experts)

Watch out: losing battles can make you drop Ranks!

How do kanji work in Battles by Rank?

Each Rank has a different mix of kanji based on your League:

N5 League: Rank E starts with 100% Kana, then progressively introduces N5 kanji until Rank S (100% N5).

Other Leagues: Rank E has 70% kanji from the previous level and 30% from the current level. As you climb Ranks, the mix reverses until reaching 100% of the current level at Rank S.

The higher your Rank, the harder the kanji you face!

What rewards do I get in Battle?

Every correct answer earns you XP (varies by League), and winning a Battle gives you a huge bonus:

• N5: +100 XP win
• N4: +150 XP win
• N3: +200 XP win
• N2: +300 XP win
• N1: +500 XP win

Harder Leagues offer bigger rewards!

• 3 wins: +20 XP
• 5 wins: +40 XP
• 10 wins: +90 XP
• 11+ wins: +100 XP (max)

Your streak also resets at the start of each month, along with the Leaderboard. Go for those consecutive wins to maximize your XP!
